What is WSIB Physiotherapy?

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) is Ontario's workplace insurance system. If you are injured at work or develop a work-related illness, the WSIB provides benefits including full coverage for physiotherapy and rehabilitation services through registered providers like Interlink Physiotherapy.

WSIB physiotherapy is delivered under the Musculoskeletal Program of Care (MSK PoC) — an eight-week, evidence-based program designed to restore function and facilitate a safe return to work. The program is structured in two four-week blocks, with treatment intensity and goals evolving as you progress through recovery.

As a WSIB-registered provider, Interlink Physiotherapy bills the WSIB directly. You do not pay anything out of pocket for approved treatment, and you do not need a doctor's referral to begin.

How to Start Your WSIB Physiotherapy Claim

Starting a WSIB physiotherapy claim involves four steps. Acting quickly is important — delays in reporting can complicate your claim and delay your access to treatment benefits.

1

Report to Your Employer

Tell your employer about your injury as soon as possible — ideally the same day it occurs. Your employer is required by law to file a Form 7 (Employer's Report of Injury/Disease) with the WSIB within three days of learning about your injury.

2

File Your Worker's Report (Form 6)

Complete and submit a Form 6 (Worker's Report of Injury/Disease) directly to the WSIB. You can do this online at wsib.ca or by calling 1-800-387-0750. Provide as much detail as possible about how the injury occurred and your symptoms.

3

Book Your Assessment at Interlink

Contact Interlink Physiotherapy to schedule your initial assessment. No referral is required. We will complete the Form 8 (Health Professional's Report) and submit it directly to the WSIB along with your treatment plan.

4

Begin Treatment

Once your claim is approved, treatment begins under the WSIB Musculoskeletal Program of Care. We provide regular progress reports to the WSIB and your employer's return-to-work coordinator throughout your recovery.

Workplace Injuries We Treat

Workplace injuries range from acute traumatic events — such as falls, lifting injuries, and struck-by incidents — to gradual onset conditions caused by repetitive tasks, awkward postures, or prolonged static positions. Both types are covered under WSIB and both benefit significantly from early physiotherapy intervention.

Acute Injuries

  • Lifting and back injuries
  • Falls from height or on the same level
  • Struck-by and caught-in incidents
  • Shoulder and rotator cuff tears
  • Knee and ankle sprains
  • Fractures and dislocations

Repetitive Strain & Overuse

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow)
  • Rotator cuff tendinopathy
  • Lumbar disc injuries from repetitive loading
  • Patellofemoral pain from prolonged kneeling
  • Cervical strain from sustained postures

The WSIB Musculoskeletal Program of Care

The WSIB Musculoskeletal Program of Care (MSK PoC) is the mandatory first-line treatment for all suitable musculoskeletal injuries. It is an eight-week program structured in two four-week blocks, with a formal reassessment at the four-week mark to determine whether Block 2 is required.

Block 1 — Weeks 1–4

Focus: Pain management, education, and early active rehabilitation.

  • Comprehensive initial assessment
  • Pain and inflammation management
  • Gentle range-of-motion exercises
  • Education on injury and recovery
  • Early return-to-work planning

Block 2 — Weeks 5–8

Focus: Functional restoration and return-to-work preparation.

  • Progressive strengthening exercises
  • Work simulation activities
  • Functional capacity assessment
  • Return-to-work planning with employer
  • Discharge planning and home program

Important: If you are not making adequate progress after Block 1, your physiotherapist can request a WSIB-funded functional abilities evaluation or refer you for specialist assessment. We advocate for your recovery throughout the process.

Return-to-Work Planning

A safe and sustainable return to work is the primary goal of WSIB physiotherapy. This does not always mean returning to your pre-injury role immediately. Depending on your injury and recovery, a graduated return-to-work plan may involve modified duties, reduced hours, or temporary reassignment to lighter tasks while you continue to recover.

At Interlink Physiotherapy, Dhiman works collaboratively with you, your employer's return-to-work coordinator, and the WSIB to develop a realistic and safe return-to-work plan. We provide regular functional progress reports and communicate any concerns about proposed work modifications that may risk re-injury.

You have the right to refuse modified work that is unsafe or that exceeds your current functional capacity. Your physiotherapist can provide documentation supporting your position if a dispute arises with your employer or the WSIB about your readiness to return.

Both physical and psychological injuries may be covered. If you are unsure whether your injury qualifies, contact us and we will help you understand your entitlements.

What if my WSIB claim is denied?+

If your WSIB claim is denied, you have the right to appeal. We can provide detailed clinical documentation of your injury and functional limitations to support your appeal.
