Step by Step After a Work Injury
Report it to your employer
Tell your employer as soon as possible, even if the injury seems small. Get first aid if you need it. Your employer has their own report to file, the Form 7.
Get health care and say it is work related
See a physiotherapist, doctor or nurse practitioner. Tell them it happened at work. The health professional you see first sends WSIB their own report, the Form 8.
File your Form 6
The Worker's Report of Injury is your side of the story. You have six months, and sooner is better. It can be filed online at wsib.ca.
Start treatment
For a single body zone injury, the first four week block of care is pre-approved and can begin while the claim is pending. Your clinic handles the treatment reporting from here.
You also need to give WSIB consent to share information about what you can safely do at work. Without that consent, benefits can be limited.

The Eight Week Program of Care
Most soft tissue work injuries in Ontario are treated through WSIB's Musculoskeletal Program of Care. It is a set program, so you always know where you are in it.
It runs up to eight weeks in two blocks. Block one is your assessment plus four weeks of treatment, and for single zone injuries it is pre-approved. Block two is another four weeks once entitlement is confirmed. If you still need care after that, your clinic can request additional treatment and WSIB decides.
To be eligible you generally need a registered claim, an injury less than eight weeks old, and a mild to moderate soft tissue injury or a fracture that did not need surgery. The program covers five body zones: the front of the trunk, the upper limb, the lower limb, the neck and mid back, and the lower back and buttocks.
Treatment inside the program is active. Expect hands on care to settle the injury, then graded exercise that rebuilds what your job actually demands, plus clear reporting on what you can safely do at work.
WSIB Physiotherapy Questions, Answered
Does WSIB cover physiotherapy?
Yes. When your claim is allowed, WSIB pays for the physiotherapy your work injury needs. WSIB pays the clinic directly, and clinics cannot bill you for care WSIB covers.
Can I choose my own physiotherapist for a WSIB claim?
Yes. Ontario workers make the initial choice of health professional for their claim, and a physiotherapist is one of the options.
One caution: changing providers after treatment has started needs WSIB approval. If you are thinking about switching clinics, call WSIB first so your benefits are not affected.
Do I need WSIB approval before starting physiotherapy?
Often no. If your injury involves a single body zone, the first block of the Musculoskeletal Program of Care is pre-approved and can start while your claim is still pending.
Injuries in more than one body zone need WSIB approval before treatment begins.
How long do I have to file a WSIB claim?
Six months from the date of injury. Filing sooner is better, because treatment and wage benefits flow from a registered claim.
The form you file is the Form 6, the Worker's Report of Injury. You can submit it online at wsib.ca.
What if I still need treatment after eight weeks?
The program of care can be followed by additional treatment if you still need it. Your physiotherapist submits the request with supporting information, and WSIB decides on the extension.
Many people finish within the program window. Those who need more care are not cut off automatically.
What does WSIB physiotherapy cost me?
Nothing for approved care. WSIB pays the clinic directly under its fee schedule, and by law the clinic cannot charge you for treatment WSIB covers.
If you ever want care beyond what WSIB approves, the clinic must tell you the cost first so you can decide.
What if my claim is denied?
You can appeal, and you can keep getting treatment while the appeal runs, through your extended health benefits or privately.
A denial is not the end of the road. At our clinic the first visit is free either way, so you can at least find out what is wrong and what recovery would take.
Can I get physiotherapy while working modified duties?
Yes, and it is common. The program of care is designed for workers who stay on the job as well as workers who are off. Treatment appointments and modified duties usually fit together.
Your physiotherapist can also describe what you can safely do, which helps your employer plan your duties.
